Repertoire

The repertoire of the Tapiola Choir is real music that grows in a unique collaboration with living composers.

Children and adolescents are quite as capable of genuine artistic expression as adults. This fundamental insight has governed the repertoire of the Choir since its founding. Composers have had access to rehearsals to experiment with their music and thereby create their compositions together with the singers. Several alumni of the Choir have become composers.

The Tapiola Choir is equally at home with a work by Kaija Saariaho at a contemporary music festival as with performing with the jazz ensemble of Heikki Sarmanto. The repertoire includes hundreds of works ranging from traditional Finnish music to pieces brought back from exotic places on international tours. One of the Choir’s principles is that all works are performed in their original languages. To date, the Choir has performed in more than 40 languages, personifying the concept of Songs Building Bridges.
